Saturday…
Found beach re-sculpted after last week’s heavy seas.
OH walking with Old Dog.
Young Dog collecting shells.
Now believe it or not but if you look hard there is a faint black line out to sea, almost dead middle of photo. That’s a Southern Right Whale. My camera is a toy one and takes terribly ordinary long distance shots, so you really will have to ‘believe it or not’, as you like.
Same thing here. Black line. Whale and her calf. Boats are required to give the whale a 100 metre leeway and one craft out there today showed no respect at all. I got super mad as it followed the whale. This is so special, these whales coming back into the bay after 100 years of absence. Why can’t people be happy to stand on the beach and watch like we did? Why scare them away? The human race is so thoughtless and selfish sometimes.
Anyway, back at House made Gooey Scones to have with minestrone soup.
Yummo.
Scones with chutney and cheese.
A good day and filled with sunshine. Daylight is one second longer … and I am about to begin the next bracket of edits for Gisborne: Book of Knights.
A good life!
Your scones look amazing … and really tasty … my tummy is rumbling now 😉
Thanks Kathryn. Very easy to make. 2 cups self raising flour, one cup grated tasty cheese, heaped teaspoon of curry powder, two tablespoons of fresh herbs, any sort. Then approx 1 cup of milk, but adjust to give right dough consistency. Knead, cut out, squash next to each other in tin (I didn’t know this till someone told me at my sewing group the other day. It helps the scones rise straight up) and cook for 10 mins @ 200 degrees. Yummy with soup because they are very heavy.
Thanks. I might have to try that…wonder if they’d work with gluten-free flour. Hmmm 🙂
I think it’d be fine. Maybe slightly heavier? Have a practice and let me know.
Looks like a great way to spend the day! And thanks for the recipe. My 13 year old son is spoiling me by taking over cooking duties this summer, and I bet he’ll enjoy making these. Can wait for “Knights!”
Actually when my own son and his cousins were young,(they’re now on the cusp of 30) they would come in from playing outside amd demolish the whole batch like a plague of locusts. There and gone in 10 minutes. They loved the savoury, cheesy flavour. Just remember to fiddle with the consistency to get the right scone mix.
Really enjoyed this post! (You may remember we corresponded briefly about Goodreads group monitors) I am envious of your walk on the beach – it looked like the weather was brisk – you are wearing a windbreaker – so looked up temperatures in Australia and it must be fall/winter there. Not so here. I live in Texas and the temp today will be 96 and it does not cool down at night. We will soon be at 100+ every day until late October- four more months.
I am going to try your scones, but is the oven temperature correct? Seems a little low. Looking forward to reading Gisborne.
Best regards
Judith
Hi Judith, I remember you well. I haven’t returned to the Goodreads groups in question. In fact I have fine-tuned the ones I belonged right down to a minimal number. My favourite is Historical Fictionistas and I often spend time reading there, if not being brave enough to comment. Sadly, the moderators of the previous groups to which you and I belonged burned my fingers quite badly. My one hope is that now Amazon own Goodreads, there may be a systematic sort-out. I know of a large number of readers who have been bullied quite badly and that’s a shame as ‘reader comment’ and interaction is fundamentally what Goodreads should be about.
Re the scones: the regular temp for scones is about 220, I think, isn’t it? But I cooked these in a new fan-forced oven at 200 degrees for 10 minutes and they worked out really well. I guess its trial and error as we all know our stoves’ idiosyncracies. Good luck with them. Let me know what happens.
Re our seasons: winter now. About 2-11 Celsius each day: 35-51 F? Frost and cold winds but no snow, in fact rarely if ever unless one is in our highlands. Today is what I call a ‘grim’ day. Cold, windy, ivory to gunmetal grey skies and unpleasant. A day to keep very busy outside or to sit inside editing after one has walked the dogs.
Thank you so much for contacting the blog and me. It’s lovely to talk with you again!
