SoS – 13/12/19
Not many words in this frantic ‘before Christmas’ post.
The little Aussie Matchbox blooms amazingly when we go to the city. When we are on the coast though, it’s a constant effort to keep things fresh and exciting in the middle of the ongoing Big Dry (to which I’ll add the word – windy!).
So my six are all those I’ve shared the previous summer – only this year, they’re one year older and showing just how stunning they can be in my white garden.
The strange and ghostly white clematis with the mauve tinge and green stripes is completely unknown. I just remember I liked it in the catalogue. It’s LOVELY on the fence.
And so’s the pom-pom green one. But actually, so’s every other clematis I have – and surprise, surprise, all whites. All eleven of them!
Just for some variation closer to the ground, I do love the pulmonaria (which flowers white) and the dicentra (I have two different varieties of white flowers).
I do apologise for the lack of names but I’m away currently on the coast and my botanical list is in the city. I’m trying to pluck names from a pre-Christmas head chock full of non-essentials. In any case, I’m sure the informed amongst you know exactly what each plant is!

Looking fabulous Prue. Ours is very wet and bedraggled.
Ah summer! A distant dream here. Lovely to see some clematis in flower. I was looking at mine earlier, thinking they need a good tidy up.
Ours in the coastal garden have suffered dreadfully from 6 weeks of howling westerlie winds. They don’t call us the Roaring Forties for nothing. So I’ve been and chopped out broken fronds and flipped off dead leaves. I think we’ve been lucky to have the response from the plants through spring. Now it’s just keeping the water up to them.
That first clematis shot is remarkable. Love the little stameny things making a brownish red stripe against the purple. Really love that one, so can see why it took your fancy. I’ve often pondered having white dicentra & not taken the plunge, mostly because my pre-Christmas head lasts all year round. Perhaps this’ll be the year. I do love dicentra. Your white garden is wonderful. Enjoy your Christmas!
Thanks so much, Lora. I have to say that anything white, mottled, grey or black is all I see these days. We’re off to Melbourne’s International Flower and Garden Festival (our answer to Chelsea) and I shall try and be objective and note all colour, not just the above mentioned shades! Happy Christmas to you and yours.
Such lovely clematises. Eleven! I haven’t been able to grow one.
Jane, in the Matchbox it’s easy. It’s a tiny garden with a very temperate micro-climate, but the effort is huge in our much bigger home-garden where heat, wind and lack of water are pinching us all the time.
