Old ladies on deck…
We all began kayaking about 11 years ago, and in that time have paddled together in many different places up and down our east coast. But over the years we have decreased in number through age and injury and we’re now trying to have one BIG kayak per summer, to add to the little ones we try to have once or twice a week. I’ve not been for many this year because of Mum’s accident and because of windy weather but I wouldn’t miss the BIG one for the world. We augmented our shrinking numbers with two extra ladies this year. A lovely group…
Paddling in the ocean off Saltworks, but the northeaster proved too strong for us to land at the beaches and enjoy a picnic, so we turned round and…
Paddled up the Little Swanport River from Saltworks…
Paddling up the channel away from the oyster racks and weedy sandbars where we got marooned…

Disturbed residents…
A good day out.
Looks so lovely! Not sure I’d be much good in a kayak. I’d be terrified of capsizing!
Once you’ve got your balance, Kathryn, it’s easy and you wear life jackets anyway, so that you float. Because we like paddling in the ocean and because our kayaks are the ‘sit-upon’ kind, (like a rowing shell) we have taken them out into deep water and practiced getting off and on where you can’t keep your feet on the bottom. I also use a lifeline which connects me to the kayak so that in the event of wind and me falling, I don’t get separated from it and we have paddle leashes as well (which I often forget to attach). And one can carry a mobile phone in a waterproof casing. But we only paddle when it’s calm – no point in risk taking at our age!!!
